Medical University of South Carolina MHA

The medical University of South Carolina commonly referred to as (MUSC) was started as a small private college for training Physicians in 1824, at a place called Charleston. It is among the oldest continuously running schools of medicine in the USA. It was later expanded into a state university with a medical center and six colleges; this was for the education of healthcare professionals, biomedical scientists and other healthcare practitioners. What is more interesting is that it also operates as a center of research and has a public hospital. The college of medicine offers a four-year medical curriculum that leads to one becoming a doctor of medicine.

The University offers the master’s degree program in two formats. Masters of health administration executive format, masters of health administration residential format. Instruction is mainly delivered online, giving room for the students to carry on with their work while completing two-three years of course work. Students are also required to report to campus for a long weekend of study and collaboration once every semester. Graduates finish 64 credit hours and no internship is required.

The masters of health administration residential format requires little or no healthcare experience, students are engaged fulltime. Classes are conducted face-to-face and the university offers a million of opportunities for real world learning. The students are required to fulfill a six credit hour internship between their first and second years. Students must also complete 62 credit hours, including the internship and an inter-professional course.

The goals of the curriculum is to make sure that the students are ready, and have a broad understanding of the healthcare systems and the factors affecting its various components. Students are equipped with knowledge and skills in human resource, strategic planning, finance, marketing, decision making and information systems. The criteria’s preferred in admission decisions include:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Previous graduate work should reflect a GPA of 3.0.
  • A good GRE and GMAT score is required for residential MHA students.
  • Three reference forms from people who can comment on applicant’s background.
  • Applicants are required to take undergraduate courses in statistics and economics.
  • Computer packages knowledge.
  • Health care experience is required for MHA executive candidates.
